CALL FOR PAPERS

Aims and Scope

Computer vision as an implementation technology for human-computer interfaces is rapidly gaining importance for industrial, military, and consumer markets. From surveillance and computer games to wearable devices, vision-based interfaces have countless applications and promise to revolutionize the way we communicate with computers. However, pervasiveness of computer vision methods in the field is often hindered by the lack of real-time, robust algorithms as well as space- and power-efficient ways to implement them in the often restricted hardware components.

This CVIU Special Issue is aimed at describing the state of the art of vision-based human-computer interfaces and at presenting recent advances in computer vision that are poised to change software, hardware, and/or interaction aspects. The focus is on works that have a clear, practical, and universal applicability to improving how computer vision can and does facilitate human-computer interaction.

Topics relevant to the Special Issue are:
  • Detection of people, faces, hands
  • Human motion and gesture recognition
  • Facial expression recognition
  • Event detection and recognition
  • Sign language analysis and recognition
  • User, context, and task modeling
  • Learning in human-computer interaction
  • Multimodal interfaces and integration (with a focus on vision)
  • Perceptual user interfaces
  • Affective computing
  • Implementation of real-time algorithms on special hardware
  • Computer vision on embedded processors
  • Vision in non-visible bands
  • Vision-based game interfaces
  • Medical applications
  • Surveillance
  • 3D interfaces for virtual and augmented reality
  • Studies of vision-based interfaces in application
  • For other topics, please contact the guest editors.

This special issue is organized in conjunction with the IEEE Workshop on Vision for Human-Computer Interaction, which was held at CVPR on June 21, 2005. Papers and more are available here. Paper submission to the journal is OPEN to all authors and not tied to participation in the workshop!

Submission guidelines

Only original papers will be considered for publication. Submissions will be judged by their contributions, their clarity of presentation, the potential impact to the field, and by their suitability to publication in an archival journal. Prospective authors concerned about the contents of their paper are encouraged to contact the guest editors well ahead of the submission deadline.

Please follow the detailed guidelines for CVIU articles on the Elsevier web site. Note that you are allowed one color page in each article.

There is no hard page limit. However, the "merit per page" and the focused-ness of the article are important criteria for acceptance. CVIU articles are typically between 8 and 25 (journal-) pages long, including all figures, tables, and references. We prefer to receive articles written with Tex/Latex.

All articles must be submitted electronically through the Elsevier CVIU web page (click on "Log In" at the top of the page - NOT on Author Gateway). For help, see the "Tutorial for Authors" linked from that page. Choose the article type Invited Human/Comp Interact. SPECIAL ISSUE and include in the cover letter that the manuscript is intended for the V4HCI Special Issue. Authors should also submit a cover letter in plain text with the following information: title of the submitted article, the name of the file that has been submitted, all authors' full names, and the corresponding author's day time phone number and e-mail. Please, send all cover letters to kolschATnps.edu.
