BASE-IT: Research

The work on this project represents a synergy of several research domains:

  • computer vision,
  • computer graphics,
  • virtual reality and game-based systems,
  • artificial intelligence and
  • human factors.
The effort also includes the work on novel training and instructional approaches to ensure that proposed system solutions are used most effectively by intended users. Whenever possible we advise and incorporate the elements that play important role in increasing the adoption rate (diffusion) of this technological innovation among the majority of its potential users.

A set of approaches that guide our work while designing and developing solutions that will be used in training:

  1. Affect large number of participants (ideally everyone): incorporate elements that ensure easier and faster large scale adoption of this technology innovation.
  2. Provide solutions that empower both instructors and trainees.
  3. Affect largest portion of unit's training cycle: solution should address their training needs before the exercise, operational needs during the exercise, and operational and training needs after the exercise.
  4. Provide a 'complete package' solution: technology (systems, tools, algorithms) and training methodologies of how to use that technology most effectively.
  5. Affect different layers of their organization structure - ensure the paths for organization-wide benefits and provide useful understandings for Marine-wide organization.
  6. Solutions transparent to participants when their safety is of concern: no changes of the way they conduct training, no interference with training event.
  7. Offered solutions constitute supplementary training interventions.
  8. Solutions applicable to a variety of military training situations & segments applicable to non-military situations,
  9. Use Open Source software solutions: Delta3D, MySQL.
  10. No proprietary solutions, no license issues - open the paths for easy future upgrades (by anyone and whenever needed).
