Research Assistant Professor of the MOVES Institute
Position: Research Assistant Professor of the MOVES Institute (X3D Earth)
Job Type: Full time, Department of Defense civilian
The NPS MOVES Institute is conducting advanced directed research into providing the U.S. Government, and its authorized agencies, a means to provide intelligence analysts the ability to rapidly visualize a wealth of available terrain data in 3D along with any supporting Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) data that may be semantically correlated with the featured terrain for a given locale. This work is being performed under NPS leadership as part of the Web3D Consortium X3D Earth Working Group, thus requiring special collaboration and coordination efforts in order to achieve maximum world-scale capabilities.
The successful candidate will be a part-time co-investigator on active funded research projects in the general area of Modeling and Simulation.
Must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field.
Proficiencies:
- Object-oriented programming, specifically in the Java programming language, Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems, a scripting language such as perl, php, etc., C++ and Matlab programming languages
- Experience working with various terrain databases
- Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and orally
Tasks:
1. Provide technical guidance and recommend to the Principal Investigator (PI) any known or researched best practices into producing rapidly generated terrain visualizations in 3D to support project goals.
2. Provide required support to the PI for various sponsor site visits and meetings abroad.
3. Perform developmental implementations and repeatable experimental analysis to provide a measurably optimal, efficient, high-performance X3D Earth repository.
4. Develop graduate level coursework for this subject area.
First Year Deliverables:
1. Open Source software and models for X3D Earth committed to a version-controlled repository at NPS, with review by the PI and peers.
2. Paper and professional Journal submissions to various related industry publications as guided by the PI.
3. Final report documenting progress made, future work and task accomplishments.
