Getting here:
VERY IMPORTANT: to enter the grounds of the Naval Postgraduate School, you must be put on "the access list" at the guardhouse at least a day in advance. Your host at NPS should do this for you. Contact 831-656-3734 to arrange access. To double-check that your name's on the list, call 656-3861 or 656-1174.
From the Monterey Airport
(NPS is 4 minutes by cab)
- Take Olmstead Road out of the airport and turn right almost immediately on Garden Road (if you come to a traffic light,you've gone too far).
- Take Garden Road about one mile until it deadends at the traffic light on Mark Thomas Drive, by the fairgrounds.
- Turn left onto Mark Thomas Drive.
- At the first traffic light, turn right on Sloat Avenue
- Go under Highway 1 (about 50 yards).
- Turn immediately right at the first entrance into NPS, the 9th-street gate.
- The long building with orange window frames to your left, running roughly parallel to Sloat street, is Watkins Hall (formerly called the Mechanical Engineering Building). We're in the northern half, second floor.
From the San Francisco Bay Area
(Approx 125 miles, allow 2 hours 15 minutes on good days to get to Monterey.)
From Silicon Valley
(Approx 85 miles, allow 1 hour and 35 minutes.)
- Take Highway 101 south to Prunedale.
- Exit Highway 156 west (to the Monterey Peninsula).
- Travel about 5 miles, take Highway 1 south. Follow Highway 1 south for about 14 miles.
- Exit Highway 1 at the "Del Monte/Pacific Grove Exit".
- This exit puts you westbound on Del Monte Road.
- At the third stoplight on Del Monte, turn left onto Sloat Avenue.
- Turn left into NPS main entrance at 9th St.

Error recovery:
- If you miss the Highway 1 "Del Monte/Pacific Grove Exit", skip the Casa Verde and Salinas exits and get off freeway at "Monterey."
- Get in the far-right lane of exit and turn right onto Aguajito Road.
- Turn sharp right immediately onto 10th St.
- Take 10th St. to Sloat.
- Cross Sloat and enter NPS at the 9th-street gate.

Weather
Packing advice: The peninsula is usually cool and often overcast, especially in summer. Think San Francisco, not Los Angeles (remember the dense fogs swirling through Maltese Falcon? They live here). The best defense is layers.
